It has been a longterm goal of mine to get down there to take in the majesty of the frozen continent. My question for you is about algae! Do you experience major blooms in the height of summer? What is the food chain like in your melt ponds, does anything consume the algae? Obviously the environment in Antarctica is quite hostile, but here in Colorado I have come across high altitude melt ponds that actually have some sort of brine shrimp in them when they are liquid.
Please keep posting about your field work, I would love to read more! Thank you for all you do, and I hope your research is fufilling. Happy New Year! We have never mailed a letter to Antarctica before, and the post office clerk told us that she never mailed a letter to Antarctica either! We mailed the letters on January 15, 2014 and it took 10 days to get to Antarctica! Interesting, it took only $1.32 to mail the letters all the way to Antarctica! Believe it or not, the temperature in Antarctica is 19 degrees Farenheit today and in Detroit, the temperature is 12 degrees, so the temperature in Antarctica is WARMER than the temperature in Detroit! Amazing!! It was fun blogging while you were in Antarctica! Have a safe trip back! There are some very interesting facts you have blogged about that I was unaware about. If you could answer a few of my questions that would be awesome!

1. With so many different things being studied, how was Dry Valleys designated as the official spot to conduct the vast research?
2. How has the physical environment changed since the last time you were in Dry Valleys? Do you notice a drastic change?
3. Are you only able to move a far distances away from the base camp to conduct research without risking machinery dying without having an electrical supply readily available?

Thanks in advance,
Julia Binder
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00609159174601940402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-13596087584772991392014-01-14T10:28:56.531-05:002014-01-14T10:28:56.531-05:00Dear Dr. Sokol:

We really liked your answers.
We would like to know if that enormous electric bill is for the whole McMurdo or just for your group. Also, who pays the electric bill and to whom? Is there a president or a government that "runs" Antarctica? Is there a special reason why McMurdo is located on that exact spot in Antarctica as opposed to another spot? Do you eat the same thing everyday, and as far as that goes, what do you eat? Does it change if you are in the field or in McMurdo? Does anyone have allergies which affects what they can eat in Antarctica?
Thank you. We look forward to hearing your answers. How did going to Antarctica change your life?
3. What sound does a penguin make?
4. Where do you sleep?
5. What animals have you seen and what animals have you seen the most?
6. What happens if there is a fire in Antarctica?
7. What happens if you get frostbite?
8. When you got there, what was the first thing you did?
9. Is it fun being a scientist, especially in Antarctica?
10. How long did it take you to get from Virginia to McMurdo Station?
11. What is the hardest thing you experienced in Antarctica?
12. We saw pictures of you building a wall of ice around your tents. How long did it take to build that wall, and how long did the wall last? Did you destroy the wall or did you leave it up?
13. What's the coldest the temperature has ever been when you were there, and what's the warmest the temperature has been?
14. You mentioned that when you were in the Dry Valleys, you did not have a chance to wash your clothes. How do you wash them in McMurdo?
15. What kind of techonology works in Antarctica: cell phones? computers? laptops? tablets?
16. Why is the research that you are doing have to be done in Antarctica?
We will be reading more of your blogs and looking at more of your pictures. Thank you for spending your time answering our questions. Have a good time in Antarctica.
Mrs. Radner's class 2013-2014 Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-25854498965463150872013-02-20T08:01:02.671-05:002013-02-20T08:01:02.671-05:00Enjoy Antarctica Photography and capture beautifu...Enjoy Antarctica Photography and capture beautiful scenes of nature with the global photography tours which is renowned for offering multiple photography packages.GlobalPhotographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11521965072127620043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-82238665716808339082013-02-05T00:36:37.708-05:002013-02-05T00:36:37.708-05:00If given a chance to have my own antarctica trip, ...If given a chance to have my own antarctica trip, I would have had asked the same questions. :pAnnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16378020855609310429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-65939990485422645992013-02-05T00:30:27.419-05:002013-02-05T00:30:27.419-05:00I always appreciate this kind of blogs that tackle...I always appreciate this kind of blogs that tackles stuffs about antarctica trips.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16378020855609310429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-16055478090924764962013-02-04T02:55:58.420-05:002013-02-04T02:55:58.420-05:00Hi Kristina, is it really possible to see penguins...Hi Kristina, is it really possible to see penguins and whales when I get to have my own Antarctica Travel?Markyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04985906534175675896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-50786156793930099322013-02-04T02:55:00.861-05:002013-02-04T02:55:00.861-05:00I hope to be in McMurdo too when I get to have my ...I hope to be in McMurdo too when I get to have my own Antarctica Travel.Markyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04985906534175675896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-25716936416126933182013-02-04T02:49:26.713-05:002013-02-04T02:49:26.713-05:00Will I be able to see those mountains too when I g...Will I be able to see those mountains too when I get to have my Antarctica Travel. ?Markyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04985906534175675896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-78071893899511563402013-01-16T02:38:38.848-05:002013-01-16T02:38:38.848-05:00I want to visit these dry valleys too when I get t...I want to visit these dry valleys too when I get to have my own antarctica trip.lizabakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12261860431735830885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7607766817639075617.post-52424023706347994432012-12-12T01:55:28.155-05:002012-12-12T01:55:28.155-05:00Great pics of the chamber. About the penguins, in what part of Antarctica did you see the penguin? What's the difference in weather between New Zealand and Antarctica?
